Fried Bread

I discovered fried bread one day when I had made bread dough but it wouldn’t rise. I didn’t want to throw it away so I tried rolling it into balls and frying it. The result was delicious! My family loved it! So now I make it as a treat from time to time. You can eat it with jam or as a side to curry/ chilli/ stew or just eat it by itself which is what we are doing this afternoon!

Use a standing mixer with dough hook:

Combine
1 & 1/4 cup hot water
2 tspn active dry yeast
1 & 1/2 tbsp sugar
Let proof for approx 10 minutes ( the yeast forms a frothy layer)

Add
1 & 1/2 tbsp margarine
3 & 1/4 cups flour
1/2 tbsp salt

Mix till it forms a soft dough

Place on lightly floured surface and knead for a few more minutes

Place in lightly greased bowl and cover with a damp towel

Let rise till it doubles in size (about an hour)

Punch down dough and separate into 1″ balls

Roll out balls on floured surface

Fry in pan with butter on low to med heat for a few minutes each side. They’ll start to pouf out and bump out – flip them then

Set aside on rack to cool
